PERRO DE GANADO MAJORERO |
INTRODUCTION TO DE PERRO DE GANADO MAJORERO
To date, we have written enough about the Perro de
Presa Canario -large number of articles, published in canary newspapers, in
Spanish and foreign specialized magazines, several books, reportages that
were emitted by the Spanish Television in the Canary Islands, videos, like
the one of Canidapresa (Italy), etc. -, we have invested a lot of time, and
means, in its promotion. Thanks to that work, the Perro de Presa Canario is
already known anywhere in the world.
About the Perro de Ganado Majorero very few has been written and published,
and due that is totally unknown, and not only outside the Canary Islands. In
the Canary Islands, the immense majority of the population does not know how
it is, although they have heard about this dog, the oldest of the islands,
without a doubt. Lamentably this is the sad reality. Most of the people of
Fuerteventura Island, from where is native this dog, don’t know it. There is
of course, a minority of the majorera population (majorero mean from
fuerteventura), old people, especially cattlemen that yes they knows what
dog it is, because they always had got them for the guard of their houses
and flocks).
The new generations know the Poodle, the Rottweiler, the Dobermann, the
German Shepherd, the Cocker, the Great Dane, the English Bulldog, the
Bullterrier, the American Pit Bullterrier, etc. etc. etc., but nothing, or
very little they know about the Perro de Ganado Majorero.
And then, there are those that speak of the Perro de Ganado Majorero
convinced that they know of what they speak about. For these people the
Majorero Dog is a very fierce animal with floating fingers in the hind legs,
in brindle coat..., and they think, and sometimes they affirm, that dogs of
those there are still many, especially in Fuerteventura. Sure that they
never have had, nor they had seen, a true majorero dog, of breed, and they
have never made the effort to research about this dog, of whom, in the best
one of the cases, they have only heard speak about.
This reality, sad reality, is similar (despite the differences, of course)
to which affected to the Perro de Presa Canario when I began to be
interesting in it, at the beginning of the decade of the 70´s, of the last
century. Respect to the Perro de Presa Canario lamentably we arrived late,
because the breed, the true breed, the one of last centuries, there was
disappear, it had been extinguished.
As I have written in multitude of occasions, the Perro de Presa Canario that
we breed today is a new breed, product of crossings carried out from 1970.
Respect to the Perro de Ganado Majorero, a little bit more, and it would
suffer the same fate than the Presa Canario.
Throughout the last thirty years (more or less) different people (few and
with very little knowledge) have tried the arduous and difficult task of the
recovery of the breed. At sight of the obtained results, little, or nothing
positive, they left the project.
Is clear that the work of recovery of a canine breed on the way to
extinction, without economy nor knowledge, is led to the failure.
In Spain and in the Canary Islands several canine breeds have disappeared.
Let us put like example the old Spanish Alano- the one that some people
present today like true Alano Español is an attempt of recreation, nothing
fortunate, of the extinct one -, the Canary Water Dog, whose direct
descendant is the Bichón Frisé, the old Perro de Presa Canario as it has
been said above, the Canary Partridge Dog, etc.
